More than 3.6 million students are being educated in the Taliban's madrasas

The Taliban's Ministry of Education announced in a press conference in Kabul on Wednesday, 11 September, that the number of religious schools (madrasas) in Afghanistan has reached 21,257 centers, where 3,687,200 students are currently receiving education.

According to the report from the Taliban’s Ministry of Education, the total number of official public and private schools is 18,337. The figures show that, for the first time in Afghanistan, the number of religious schools has surpassed that of public and private schools.

In June 2022, Taliban leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada issued a decree instructing the establishment of "jihadi madrasas" in all Afghan cities, with each madrasa having the capacity to simultaneously accommodate 1,000 students. According to the Taliban leader's order, teachers, staff, and students of these madrasas are paid monthly salaries from the Taliban government’s budget.

Officials from the Taliban's Ministry of Education stated that the leader’s decree on the establishment of jihadi madrasas has been implemented.
